Recruiting Lab Assistants Position at University of California Field Season 2025, The Wilson Lab is an agroecology research group with an applied entomology research and extension program. Our focus is on the development, evaluation, and adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) practices for vineyards and orchards . We employ methods ranging from the molecular to the landscape scale, engaging with the agronomic, ecological, social, and political-economic dimensions of California agriculture. Although affiliated with the Department of Entomology at the University of California, Riverside (UCR), our team is based off-campus at the UC Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center near Fresno, CA.

 

Our research spans multiple crops and pests, with a primary emphasis on orchard and vineyard agroecosystems. We specialize in biological control, mating disruption, the sterile insect technique, habitat diversification, and landscape ecology. 

Lab Assistants – Roles and Responsibilities

We are currently recruiting 3-4 lab assistants (Laboratory Assistant 1) to support field and laboratory research projects at the Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Parlier, CA. A minimum commitment of one year is required, with the possibility of renewal. This dynamic position involves a combination of field, laboratory, and greenhouse work. Lab Assistants will collaborate as a team, working closely with the Lab Manager, who will coordinate day-to-day operations and scheduling.

Lab Assistants’ duties will include both field- and lab-based activities such as:

  •       Collecting insect and plant material from field research site
  •       Establishing and maintaining experiments
  •       Growing plants for lab trials Up keeping laboratory insect colonies
  •       Sorting and identifying insects and plants from field sampling events

Qualifications and Benefits

  • This is a full-time position (40 hours/week) starting from January 6, 2025.

  • Estimated starting annual salary: $41,781 – $48,358 ($20.01 – $23.16/hour) plus benefits.

  • Preferred experience includes agricultural entomology, integrated pest management (IPM and environmental science.

  • Positions are open to anyone with a high school diploma and completed a bachelor’s degree B.Sc (Hons) in plant science, entomology, , agronomy, environmental science ecology, or a related field.
